Outreach

On December 4, 2007, Session approved an Outreach Event Planning Packet that was developed by the Worship and Membership Committee during the past several months with extensive input from various church members and leaders. It includes procedures and check lists to use when planning outreach-related events or projects at Third Presbyterian, along with a simple final report form to be submitted to Session after the event. This packet will be a very helpful tool for our church committees and individual members to use when they are planning an outreach project. The completed packet will also be a great resource to refer to when a similar event or project is planned at third Presbyterian in future years. Thank you to everyone who gave input and suggestions as this packet was being developed! If you would like a copy, please contact Amy Sandberg, or click here for a Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF.

The cost this year is $15.50.  Checks can be made out to Third Presbyterian Church and should be clearly marked “Poinsettias”.

“Christmas Card” Gift for Missionaries

Third Presbyterian Church has a tradition each Christmas of sending a special monetary gift to our missionaries. Our missionary family is the Glen and Carol Hallead family who are serving in Ghana.  Glen formerly served as a Pastor at Utica, IL, in our own Presbytery!

During Advent, a large card will be placed in the Fellowship Room. We ask that you use this card to send Christmas greetings to the rest of the congregation; and the money you save on cards & stamps can be given to the Halleads. Your name will be listed on the card when you make your contribution. Checks can be made out to Women’s Association of Third Presbyterian Church.

Dear Church Family,
I want to thank you so much for your cards, calls and visits during my recent surgery. Thank you for your prayers. Again, I can’t seem to find the words to express how very blessed I am to have such a wonderful church family.
                                                                    God’s blessings to you all,
                                                                            Kay Carriglitto
Dear Third Pres. Family,
I would like to thank everyone for the gifts of money and for coming to the benefit in November. I think there was fun for all.
                                                                    Love,
                                                                            Gayle LaPier
Dear Third Pres Family,
Thank you for the flowers, cards and prayers.
                                                                    Most Sincerely,

Radio News

This month on WTPB LP 99.3 FM Radio, you will be hearing brief messages about Third Presbyterian Church from several members of our church. Also beginning the second week of December, listen to wonderful Christmas Music and Religious Christmas Programs, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Warm Clothing Drive Update

There was an overwhelming response to the warm clothes drive! Thanks to all of the generous members and neighbors who took the time to donate badly needed clothing for the area homeless shelters. Because there were two full van loads of clothes collected, we were able to deliver them to both of Rockford’s Rescue Mission locations as well as Carpenter’s Place. All three locations thanked us profusely and assured us that each piece of clothing would be going to help fill a great need.

Outreach Event Update December 2007

Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers and participants who helped make our first annual Fall Family Fun Fest on October 28 so wonderful! At least 75 people, many of whom are our neighbors, came out on a beautiful fall afternoon to enjoy the costume parade, the games in the park, the crafts and the snacks in the Dining Room. We ran out of hot cider, apples, candy and popcorn but not until everyone had a really great time. A special thanks goes to Jeanne Fauerbach and Jeannette Sheehan who led the effort with Outreach. Although there are too many wonderful helpers to mention by name, we want to especially thank the Squires and Night Crusaders for making the event extra special and much easier for the “old” volunteers (those over 30).

Wonderful Memorial Gifts Enhance Our Ministry!

Thanks to the generosity of family and friends of loved ones, several recent purchases have been made that will now enhance the ministry of Third Presbyterian Church in the years to come:

A video projector and cart and related equipment have been purchased in memory of Rose Lentz by William and Louise (daughter of Rose) Gross and family. The equipment is now being used weekly, especially by our new Rotation Sunday School for grades 1-5. A new table was also purchased in memory of Rose for the Squires (grades 6-8) Room.

Three new sets of shelving will soon be added to the room at the west end of the Dining Room to help house some History items and equipment for Rotation and other Sunday School activities. These shelf units are in memory of Martha Wubbena, by husband Gerald, and family and friends.

Our new Computer Lab is also a busy place and also located in a room on the Dining Room level. The furniture stations for the Computer Lab are in memory of Kenneth McLaughlin, by his wife, Joyce, family and friends. The computers were given by various members of the church family, and some were given and many upgraded in memory of Maida Kalb by her children, and family and friends. And Julie and Bill Leber provided the shelving and upper ledge brackets for the computer lab in memory of Tom Truitt, Sr.

For Computer Lab work, we also need to thank Terry Dade and Infinite Velocity for contributing many, many hours of expertise and labor! And thank you to Terry and her husband Dave’s friends at Rockford Auto Auction for contributing several computer monitors, keyboards and various other computer equipment.

What a Wonderful Roast Beef Dinner!

The Women’s Association would like to thank all of the people who helped make our Roast Beef Dinner a success again this year.

Our biggest and most sincere THANKS go to Cathy Logsdon and Kim Ponder and their families for all of the organization and

preparation. And THANK YOU Ticket Sales Coordinator, Shirley Storsveen.

Our next big THANK YOU goes to all of you who bought tickets and came to enjoy our famous Roast Beef Dinner.

THANKS to all the people who prepared ahead for the wonderful weekend of fellowship: the people who worked on advertising, ticket printing and sales and placemat printing, the people who donated money and desserts, the people who set up and decorated the Dining Room, made salads and peeled potatoes, and the people who prepared the food and cut pies on Saturday.

And then THANKS to all of the wonderful workers, especially the young people, who showed up at 4:00 PM. They sold tickets, sat people, helped with the lifting, waited on tables, poured beverages, served food and made our guests feel so comfortable.

THANKS to the tired and very efficient group of people who helped clean up the Dining Room by cleaning and removing tables, putting away all of the supplies, taking out garbage and generally cleaning so we could have Sunday School and Fellowship 1/2 Hour the next morning.

A BIG THANKS for all of those people in the kitchen who stood for hours washing dishes and pans and serving food and the special people who stayed until all of the food was put away and the last dish and counter were washed.

The dinner is indeed a great undertaking, but the fellowship and love shared by everyone is what our church’s foundation is built upon.

THANKS TO ALL AND GOD BLESS YOU!

The Presbyterian Women’s Association

Rally Day Balloons Found!

“Hello, I’m Mary and I got you’re message in my back yard in Elgin , IL. On the back side of the paper it had a name of Deb Wise on it. I was tickled to get it! I had to show it to my neighbors. I’m 75 years old and I loved it. I’m going to show it to my kids who do a lot in the church. Thank you and God bless you!”

“Today we found a white balloon with a note attached. The name at the top of the note is “Doug.” We live in Plato Center, IL about 10 miles NW of Elgin and thought you’d like to know.”

Regards,

Mike Pedersdorf

“To Samantha Kats: Thanks so much for your message! Your balloon made it all the way to Hoffman Estates. My name is Angela and we were playing on the playground yesterday when a child brought one of my teachers the message that you have sent. If you weren’t so far away, I’d come to visit! Thanks and God bless!!”

Dear Bryan Olson: This is just a short note to let you know that your balloon landed in our back yard in DesPlaines, IL. We live about 7 miles from the O’Hare airport. I noticed the deflated balloon and your note this morning when I was walking towards my car in the garage while on my way to work. Thank you for the message of the love of Jesus Christ!”

Sincerely,

Janet Derlis

Other News

  • Worship & Membership’s Outreach Committee presented information to Session members at a breakfast on June 24th outlining the concerns, goals and methods of the membership drive efforts currently being undertaken and being planned by the Outreach group. The packet of this information is available in the office, from Sue Richards or Mary Hartshorn for any interested member. We hope to get feedback, suggestions and volunteers.
  • The Session has organized a study to committee that will begin meeting in September to spend the next several months discussing the desirability of some type of screen / projector system for the sanctuary.  Gary Jones will chair the committee which will include representatives from Deacons, Trustees, Worship-Membership, Education Committee, Benevolence and Finance Committee, and Session.
  • The Worship & Membership Committee is pleased to announce that two huge efforts were successfully accomplished in the last month for outreach effort:

  •  Our first mass mailing to our neighbors in the surrounding community was sent out just before Labor day. It included a church pamphlet as well as a new church activity flier which listed all the activities both church sponsored and church hosted which are currently under way or planned. Over 2100 went out to the residents in the North End Square and Edge Water neighborhoods. These fliers were handed out to attendees at the Concert/Ice Cream Social as well. Extra copies of both can be found on the Visitor’s Table at Third Presbyterian in the Fellowship Room.. A very special thanks to Amy Sandberg. This would not have happened without her help and expertise.

  •  The Concert/Ice Cream Social on September 8th was a huge success. Well over 100 people attended, many of whom were first time guests from the neighborhood. Starlite Radio performed to the delight of all. The Squires handled face painting and the Night crusaders passed out balloons. We had VERY happy kids. The ice cream and root beer floats were a big hit with all ages. Our prayers were certainly answered with the beautiful weather to make this a very special evening.

John Russell, from our radio station, was an honored guest and recorded the concert for future broadcasting. It took many, many people to make this happen. A very special thanks goes to Murray Hanson, Linda and Ed Cunningham, Wylda Huffman, the Squires, the Night Crusaders, the entire Outreach Subcommittee, Amy Sandberg, members who just pitched in, and our sponsored. Donations were received from Logli and Walmart, Altamore Restaurante, La Di Da, The Kilt & Clover, Curves and Cherry Blossom Floral. Please say thank you on your next visit.
